CAPS offers three ways to integrate the arts into the curriculum: Residencies, Workshops and Performances.

Residencies
In a residency the artist works with one classroom of students for multiple sessions over multiple days. Each session is approximately one hour a day. Residencies are usually 5 sessions over 5 days, although they range from 3-9 sessions over 3-9 days. In a residency, the artist blends his or her expertise into the school curriculum and engages the students with a variety of hands-on learning experiences. Up to 5 different classrooms can be scheduled in a day; often they are the different classes of the same grade level.

Workshops
In a workshop the artist works with one classroom of students for a single session lasting approximately one hour. In a workshop, a facet of the artist’s expertise is blended into the curriculum and students are engaged in hands-on learning. Up to 5 different classrooms can be scheduled in a day; often they are the different classes of the same grade level.

Performances
In a performance the artist performs for an audience composed of one to multiple classrooms for a single session lasting approximately one hour. Through the performance, the artist entertains, educates and broadens students’ horizons, cultivating active student participation. Multiple performances can be scheduled in a day.

Design Your Own
CAPS offers a Design Your Own component for programs. If the program as described does not fit your exact needs, talk to us! We'll work with you to design the program that is perfect for your group. We also design full-day programs and programs for afterschool programs and intersession programs. For more information about Design Your Own programs, contact us via email or call (919) 560-2718.

Payment
Funding for CAPS comes from a number of sources:

  • Each Durham Public School has a budget line item to provide CAPS programs to their students ($2 per elementary and middle school student, $1 per high school student)
  • Orange County Schools also provides money for CAPS programs
  • PTA’s
  • Grants available through the CAPS office
  • Money collected from students
  • Grade level money for buses
  • Fundraisers or PTA Special Project Funds
  • Business sponsors from parent connections

The cost of each program covers the artist’s fee for preparing and presenting the residency, an Orientation meeting with the participating educators and artist, materials used in the program for students and educators, and an administrative fee to cover administrative costs (Guidebook, brochures, communication with schools, educational materials for PTA’s, principals and educators).

Staff Development
Get credit for having a CAPS program in your classroom! Certificate renewal credit is available to Durham Public Schools teachers through our on-site renewal program. Use the CAPS program as a springboard for new approaches to your teaching. Just involve yourself actively in the activity and design follow-up activities to receive DPS teacher renewal credit. If you are an Orange County teacher or child care provider, you may also be able to participate in a CAPS program for credit. Contact your staff development representative. For more information about teacher renewal credit, contact us via email or call (919) 560-2718.
