Becoming a CAPS Artist
The CAPS Teaching Artist Application for the 2013-2015 school years will be available online in the fall of 2012! Contact the CAPS office at (919) 560-2718 or sadams@durhamarts.org if you would like to be notified when the application becomes available.
Who should apply to become a CAPS Artist?
Any professional artist or group who has a passion for and experience in arts-in-education, and wishes to share that passion and expertise with students, teachers, and the community partners as a CAPS Artist.
How does CAPS work?
- DAC is responsible for the organization and management of the CAPS program. CAPS recruits and contracts artists, creates a Guidebook with artist programs, then coordinates the CAPS programs with the artists, schools and community partners. DAC also seeks outside grants to provide low-cost programs to support schools with limited funds.
- Artists propose programs for the Guidebook and, if accepted by the review panel, they provide programs to schools and partners.
*DAC distributes the Guidebook to schools and community partners at the beginning of the school year.
- Schools and partners request and schedule programs from the Guidebook through DAC via an Order Form.
- CAPS Manager informs the artist of request.
- Artist contacts lead educator to schedule a Teacher Orientation meeting for all teachers involved in the program.
- At the meeting, artist gives teachers a Learning Packet and discusses program dates and details.
- Artist provides program.
- DAC pays artist at the conclusion of program.
- Partner pays DAC the artist’s fee plus a commission equaling the CAPS Guidebook price.
- Partners pay with allocated budgeted funds or through fundraising of special funds.
What is the artist fee structure?
For residencies and workshop, artists are compensated based on an orientation meeting, planning/production, hourly instruction and reimbursement for materials. For performances, artists are compensated in a flat fee negotiated between DAC and the artist. The Durham Arts Council provides administrative services in the form of booking facilitation and contracting, marketing, artist/cultural provider payment, background checks, and 1099 tax filings and therefore includes a 25% administrative fee in pricing of all programs.
What happens to my application?
- A committee of artists, administrators and curriculum specialists will review applications. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decisions in the spring of 2013.
- Artists who are accepted into the 2013-2015 CAPS Program will be included in the 2013-2015 CAPS Guidebook, distributed to schools at the beginning of the school year.
