Introducing the Ella Fountain Keesler Pratt Legacy Project!

In her 52-year career at Duke University and the Durham Arts Council, Ella Fountain Keesler Pratt nurtured the arts life at Duke and in Durham as a presenter of diverse performances and exhibits, a mentor, an advocate, an educator and occasionally, a revolutionary. Ella Fountain's work made an enormous impact on the arts and arts administration on a local, state and national level.

Her passion for encouraging young artists shone through everything she did and is exemplified in the Emerging Artists Program which she nurtured and directed until her passing in 2008.

The 25th Anniversary of the Emerging Artists Program is a fitting moment to introduce the Ella Fountain Keesler Pratt Legacy Project, which will both honor Ella Fountain and translate her legacy into future action by supporting the programs that she founded.

The Durham Arts Council Emerging Artists Program

The Emerging Artists Program was launched in 1984, the brainchild of Dr. James Semans, Ella Fountain Pratt, the North Carolina Arts Council and Michael Marsicano, then Executive Director of the Durham Arts Council. The Emerging Artists Grant Program is designed to enable individual artists who have mastered the basic techniques of their art form to complete projects that will establish their professional presence. During the first 25 years the Program has made 389 grants totally $391,856.

The Emerging Artists Program is cited repeatedly by local artists as providing important financial support and significant public recognition of their professional achievements. Durham Arts Council coordinates this program in partnership with the arts agencies of adjacent Chatham, Orange, Granville and Person Counties. This joint effort provides an efficient, non-duplicative administration and allows artists from Durham, Chatham, Orange, Granville and Person Counties to participate in the Emerging Artists Program. The cooperative nature of the program has also strengthened relations between arts organizations in these counties and has encouraged networking between artists in the region.

Durham Arts Council’s Emerging Artists Grant Program is funded by grants from the North Carolina Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art, The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the Chatham County Arts Council, the Orange County Arts Commission, the Granville Arts Council, the Person County Arts Council, gifts to the Durham Arts Council Annual Arts Fund, the Ella Fountain Pratt Fund, the Wainwright Fund for New Works and support from other interested organizations and individuals.

The Ella Fountain Keesler Pratt Legacy Project is funded by a lead grant from The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, grants from the Fund for the Carolinas and Duke University, and sponsorship by Mark Day Company.
