Unwind after a long week at the Artists' Reception on Friday, August 15, 2008, 5-7 PM and then check out other Third Friday events.
Marjorie Pierson, will exhibiting Louisiana Marsh, a collection of large format photographs taken after Hurricane Katrina. These works are part of Pierson's long term project documenting the evolving landscape of south Louisiana.
Michael Fowler, Associate Professor of Design at The University of South Carolina at Aiken, will be exhibiting Lyrical Landscapes, a collection of oil paintings worked mostly from memory and imagination influenced by the South Carolina landscape. The exhibits will be on display July 27 - September 7, in the Allenton and Semans Galleries, Durham Arts Council.
Artist receptions and exhibits are free and open to the public. The DAC is located at 120 Morris St. in downtown Durham and the galleries are open Monday – Saturday 9 am – 9 pm, and Sunday 1 – 6 pm. For parking and directions the public may call (919) 560-2787.
Too much empty wall space in your house or office? Artwork in the galleries is available for purchase unless otherwise indicated. All purchases support artists and the Durham Arts Council. NEW! Piedmont Laureate Program Announced: Deadline Friday, Aug. 29 |
The City of Raleigh Arts Commission, Durham Arts Council, Orange County Arts Commission, and the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County announce the opening of the newly created honorary position of Piedmont Laureate.
The Piedmont Laureate will be appointed for 1 year, receive a $5,000 honorarium, and offer the following activities in Wake, Durham, and Orange counties:
- Present readings at designated public sites
- Encourage creative writing for all age groups
- Promote literature at select public events
- Bring attention to literature in less traditional settings;and
- Propose original activities to expand appreciation of the literary arts
All writers residing in Wake, Durham, or Orange counties who meet the guideline criteria may apply to be appointed Piedmont Laureate. Program guidelines and application forms will be available at www.durhamarts.org. Emerging Artist Grant Application & Info Sessions Announced: Deadline Monday, Sept. 15 |

Emerging Artist Grants are career development project grants of up to $1,500 for artists living in Chatham, Durham, Granville, Orange or Person Counties. Grant applications are due 9 PM, Monday, September 15, 2008, to the Durham Arts Council. For more information about this program visit the Emerging Artist Info Page, applications will be uploaded to this page shortly and will be available in hard copy at the DAC Front Desk.
Information Sessions to explain the program will be held in the following counties:

Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback concerning Durham Art Walk dates. You helped shape the event to serve the artists and the community.
Durham Art Walk is a unique self-guided shopping tour of galleries, artist studios, and impromptu exhibits in businesses throughout downtown, featuring the original artwork of over 150 artists. Shop! Enjoy live music, food and fun activities for the whole family. Durham Art Walk is presented & produced by the Durham Arts Council with support from the City of Durham Parks and Recreation Department.
Call for Artists DAW is open to all local artists of all ages. All artwork shown must be produced by the artist representing the work. Artists who do not have a studio or downtown space will be assigned sites on a first come first served basis. To register, download a registration form www.durhamartwalk.com and send in with applicable fee. Registration form will be uploaded to site by July 19th, deadline for registering is September 1, 2008.

DAC Facility Grant Applications: Deadline Thursday, Oct. 15 |
Are you an arts group or artist in need of a performance, rehearsal space, or meeting space for a short period of time?
DAC Facility Grants support short-term projects in all art forms. Please note that space cannot be used for fundraising events. Grant applications are due Wednesday, October 15, 2008, by 9 PM for individual or group activities taking place between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2009. DAC & DAG Call For Artists 2009-2010: Due January 31, 2009 |
The Durham Arts Council and Durham Art Guild will be accepting exhibit proposals for solo or group shows through the annual DAC & DAG Call For Artists 2009-2010. Applications will be available to download soon from the DAC's How Exhibits are Chosen web page. All applications and support material are to be delivered to the Durham Arts Council by 9:00 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2009.

Durham Art Guild: Member Artist Residency Program (Oct. '08- Sept. ,09): Deadline August 4, 2008 The Durham Art Guild (DAG) announces the DAG Member Artist Residency Program which provides members with a rent-free studio space to further develop their artistic pursuits. One applicant will be awarded a studio space from October 2008 through September 2009, in the newly renovated Golden Belt Campus. Residency includes utilities, parking, and wireless internet; the residency is valued at $4,675.00. Members over the age of 21, in any stage of their artistic development, and who has been an active member in the Durham Art Guild since August 2007, are eligible to apply for the residency.

Furthermore Program Offers Grants in Nonfiction Publishing: Deadline: September 15, 2008 and March 15, Annually An initiative of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the Furthermore program supports nonfiction book publishing about the city; natural and historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public issues. Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations. Grant recipients have included civic and academic institutions, museums, independent and university presses, and professional societies. Trade publishers and public agencies may apply for grants in partnership with an eligible nonprofit sponsor. Applications from individuals are not accepted. Grants range from $500 to approximately $15,000 each and may support writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography, illustration, and printing and binding.

DAC's 35th Annual CenterFest Arts Festival: Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 20th & 21st
CenterFest is the longest running juried outdoor arts festival in North Carolina and the largest arts and community festival in Durham. Showcasing the arts, the festival hosts over 150 juried visual and performing artists from across the country and provides visitors with great food, diverse entertainment, and educational activities for families.
